Tour Guidelines/Suggestions

This is just a general outline for giving tours, some suggestions on what to cover, and how to present our space.

General Walk Around

Do a walk around of the space, explain the tools, and what the permission system is like. Don't get too caught up in every detail a good time frame is around 10~20 minutes for the tour, but don't hesitate to talk more, if the person/people you are talking to are inquisitive.

Classes

Explain what we offer, and how new members can get involved.

Rules

Explain “Be excellent to each other” and how this whole hackerspace thing works.

Membership

Explain how the space is funded by members, what you get, access, etc.

Why are you involved?

It's kind of important to explain why you personally are involved, what you get out of it and why you think others are involved. Something along the lines of “For $600 dollars a year ($50 dollars a month) you can purchase a pretty nice tool for yourself, but here at The Hack Factory you can get involved with a great community and have access to lot of great tools.”

Ask

Ask what the people are interested in, have a conversation about it, point them in the direction of other members that have similar interests.

Next Steps

Explain how to get involved, to come to Wednesday night open hacks, to bring in projects to work on and/or discuss, to sign up on the fourm, and google groups, follow on twitter, etc. There is some really great information on the Wiki for people to digest as well.
