Howdy.

I've been experimenting with integrating the authentication systems for phpBB3, our forum software, and Dokuwiki which runs our new wiki. I discovered a script on the Dokuwiki site that provides very basic authentication support. That is, if the user exists in phpBB you can use Dokuwiki. Beyond that it doesn't support different wiki authentication levels (read, update, super user, etc.)

I'm going to try fleshing it out a bit more so that it actually supports group in Dokuwiki. Then I think we could be one step closer to having one unified authentication system.

I'm working on a forum/wiki set-up on my own server. When I get it working there I'll work on porting it over here.

Will keep ya'll posted here.

This would be great. Some of us were thinking of starting a git repository for Twin Cities Maker, this would be awesome to have there once it's done as it might be useful to others.

*note: I actually haven't had direct access with git so I might have it a bit off but I think I have the idea right social coding right?

Skyler that's great, thank you, I think this will make the Wiki much more used and useful.

Git by itself (a distributed version control system) provides the technical bits to make editing easier with multiple people/branches. It doesn't make anything magically "social" though. Web services like Github put a shinier wrapper around it that fill in some of the edges, making things like branching and merging much easier (and graphical too). Happy to set something up though in the future.

Yea, Github slogan I think is social coding, that's were I got it from.

I have an upcoming project that I am thinking about using Github for I hope it works out.

Hey Orion, would I be able to execute one php script from another using shell_exec() on our server here? If so I believe I have a reliable working solution for combined auth.

I've been using Mercurial (Hg) for personal projects and have found it to be quite easy and streamlined. I think it's good for small to medium sized projects -- and I feel the tool is easier to get up and running with than git (fewer options/"do one thing well"). Might just want to compare it to git. (Nothing wrong with Git; git is great -- just my opinion that it's more "advanced" in ways to do things; Distributed Version Control Systems(DVCS) are superior in my mind for this type of group)

One great, quick Mercurial intro is here: http://hginit.com
One good public repository for Hg projects is BitBucket (could model it after this): https://bitbucket.org/

On topic, great idea on combining auth. A remote accessible SFTP server or DVCS would be a great addition also! :!:

Speaking of Mercurial, Matt Mackall who I believe is a tcmaker member (or used to be at some point) is THE lead developer of Mercurial.

Attention!

Forum-wiki auth testing in progress.... will update when done.

Please report any problems you experience here.

If you had a doku wiki account set-up your forum credentials should now get you into the wiki. It's the same account/password but you do still have to login seperately (because I'm not attempting to merge the cookies yet).
