No, it's not perfect, but it does dynamically change if you change your gravatar. (after the cache clears)

There is a mod for phpbb2 that enables gravatar support but I don't know if it's compatible with phpbb3.

kinda surprising I was under the impression that phpBB was pretty widely used.
