Welcome, Tom! Glad that you've posted. Probably the vice and laptops would be welcome if the laptops are in working order. Hopefully you received our recent email about membership options. We've got something posted about that on our blog as well. Please do visit us and we'll discuss options for participation.

Tom dropped off the post vice off, it is currently in the metal shop area and is in need of a stand, and a strike plate so the post does not drill into our floor.

Just to help explain the vice a bit, it is used by Blacksmiths to hold objects that they are shaping / striking. The impact from the blow is transferred down the post.

Tom's is several different colors and will work well for our starting efforts, once we get a stand built for it.

Here is a link that describes the Post Vice (or I guess it is also called a Leg Vice)

Booka

BTW, thanks again Tom, and thanks for stopping down.

Hello, I'm Michael. I've visited the Hack Factory a few times for Handmade Music: Minneapolis events and have now joined as a member.

I do bioinformatics for my day job, a lot of Free & Open Source Software (FOSS) development in my spare time

some hacking around with FOSS audio software in my spare spare time

and I'm also interested in building electronic/electroacoustic instruments, woodworking, &c.

I'm looking forward to putting some of that rough cut lumber to good use. Speaking of which, does anyone have a planer? I have a jointer I could bring in, but it's only a small one (Delta/Rockwell 4").

Glad to have you aboard, and to meet you tonight. We do not have a thickness planer at the HF yet, it is of course something we would love.

We will have a Jointer working once we get the Power Connect for the Shopsmith (It looks to be all there)

We still have a few larger gaps in our tool list for all area's, but we have a great community of folks and with a little time we may find one for the right price (which so far has been free or member loaned/funded)

We could start looking at using our new found wood stock to make little projects that sell on behalf of the club, and pool that towards tools, I know a couple of us have talked about that, but nothing formal.

I was thinking we should hold a couple woodworking meetings, just to get those interested in a room at the same time and discuss tools, projects, and lessons (I have not done anything formal since 9th grade woodworking, and while I read a bit, practice is something I could use a coach around to improve my skills.

Cool, I'll bring in my jointer for now.

One project I'll be doing before the holidays is wooden train tracks.

As one of the comments says, the male connectors are slightly oversized and don't fit too well -- it might be better to make all ends female and make dogbone connectors, e.g.

It might also be fun to come up with some really crazy track shapes and shape them on the CNC, like loops and helices.

The dogbone connectors might be a good application for the MakerBot

Want to chime in here on Air Tools:

I'll be keeping my air tools for nailing and stapling at the HF. This is what I have

You are welcome to use it, It's awesome for lots of fiddly connections that are a pain with a hammer. Like making drawers, with all of our drawer sides :) If you use it please put a drop of oil in the air inlet when you are done (only air tool oil please, it's with the guns)and drain the tank, there's a drain in the back. If it's getting low on consumables, you may need to buy some, please don't use them up without replacing.

Please note that the compressor is great for this kind of tool, but it is NOT a continuous duty compressor, meaning if whatever you are using it for causes it to run more than 50% of the time, you shouldn't be using the compressor for that task.

(As fate would have it as soon as I dropped this off I got a honey do list that required it so it's home with me this weekend)

Otherwise John is going to incorporate it into the tool cart he is building.

Oh, one more thing. I dropped off additional 4" Dust collection hose, gates, and other parts as well. I think John had a plan to incorporate a hood into one of the tools. Something like that is in the box as well. It's on the top of the pallet racking, it's got a picture of it's contents on the side.

Thanks for the vacuum attachments Pete. I was just thinking about that again on Thursday. My plan is to add a port for it on the Jet table saw and the Radial Arm saw.

Yep no problem, I had to hit Home Depot over lunch and found the plywood. I'll grab it tomorrow. If anyone will be at the HF tomorrow early evening 6-7 ish and could help me unload it, that would be great, Do you want it by the cart, or just along the wall somewhere?

I grabbed the CNC Lathe tonight and brought it home for awhile, there are two things I just haven't had time to get sorted out at the HF, and I figured I might have more time at home over the break. I'm hoping to bring it back once we have moved into the new space, the changes will include a working tach, so threading is an option, and a new tool post, which I believe is coming for xmas.

I'll try and get the pc and control system combined again like they used to be if the motherboard will fit in the controller case.
