WANTED: 600W+ PC Power Supply for our MakerBot

Postby wammie » Fri Oct 22, 2010 2:54 pm

All, I've heard our MakerBot is a bit under powered now that we've installed a new higher power extruder assembly. We're looking for a 600W+ PC power supply to replace the one currently in our MakerBot. If you have one to donate or sell cheap, please let us know!

Here's a question from one of the electronically challenged.

Would it be possible to take 2 300 w. power supplies and run them in parallel?

I ask as, the 600w and up seem pricey, but the lower wattage ones are a dime a dozen.

In theory if you just needed more current at 12V or similar you could hook them up in parallel and get greater current. In speaking with John, the problem is the maker bot uses the 24 (i think) pin output from a PC power supply, and this makes the brute force approach difficult. I think the current supply is 400W, it's possible a 500W supply would work. Or we could get a high current supply just for the extruder head heater, if we can isolate it's source and swap it out without having to mess with the rest of the circuitry.

There may also be a matter of aesthetics and portability involved.

Any reason to not try this? $30 tiger direct. What size is the current supply?

I suppose we could find some PS requirements online. I think our current supply is a 400-430 watter. I've sent Jon Barclay a note to chime in here; he's probably already researched this a bit.

A power supply is 50 bucks, right? Do we just want to buy one? I'll throw down $5-10.

Above 500W it runs a bit more, locally General Nanosystems has a 650 for 99 and a 750 for 129.

They even have a few over 1000w if we want.

And I am sure these would be cheaper elsewhere, but this is local, and serve the "gotta have it now" purpose...

We could also ask if they wanted to donate one....

Then again, Tiger direct has a 600w for $54 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... =O261-2017
