Yesterday I viewed this great TedTalks video on YouTube. An educator does experiments in self-teaching and explores the phenomena of disadvantaged students being able to teach themselves with a computer and no supervisory instruction.

He's invented the "Granny Cloud" which connects grandmothers to kids via computer teleconferencing, for the benefit of grandmothers' ability to be encouraging and provide a face for those "look what I can do" moments.
