I had brought up the Art Shanty Project at the last meeting, but didn't really get a chance to bring up the topic of assembling one for next year's event. I was at the shanties today and found out that my favorite shanty will be destroyed unless someone was willing to disassemble it and move it off the ice. This is REALLY last minute (it must be removed on the 15th), but I was wondering if this is something that anyone else would be interested in?

The shanty is the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition shanty aka the Shackelton Shanty. It looks like an old boat tuned upside down. It is quite large (10' wide x 21' long), warm, fairly weather-proof, and could be pretty easily modified. There are a lot of factors to consider in this matter:
1. people to help disassemble the shanty
2. means of transporting the pieces
3. storage for the next year until the event starts again (multiple storage locations are a possibility)

I'm willing to pitch in and get a rental truck if we can't find trucks and trailers and am also willing to spend the full day out there working on this. Unfortunately, my car is too small to haul anything and I don't have space to store it.

yeah, it IS short notice - but i am up for some disassembly and sourcing of homes for it.
my 14 year old accord cant really transport much.. unless the shanty breaks down into neat 2'x4' pieces

I have a Subaru Outback; the back seat folds down & there's a roof rack. I have hand tools. I have NO storage options, though.
I'm concerned about the state of the ice, considering how warm it's been recently (and today, and tomorrow). No Lake Erie repeats, please.
When were you thinking of doing this?

it'll take some movement of crap in my garage (heaviest thing is a huge window ac unit) but if folks are willing to pitch in on that i'll offer the spare bay of my garage. n.b. it can't take up a full bay, i do have some crap that needs storing there, but if a person organizes brewing supplies a few things can move to the other side, and there'll be a solid 8' wide of storage a standard garage depth we can use.

(wasn't planning on moving any of that crap, so i'm not too keen on moving it unless we're actually going to accomplish this)

ok it sounds like we've got a van and an outback, and some rope.... when are we going to try to do this? it has to be gone *by* sunday, or sunday eve?

I do believe it has to be removed ON the 15th. The art shanties in general are still open on the 14th, unless the particular owner was closing up early.

Krista, do you know *why* they plan on destroying it? Are the owners abandoning the art shanty project alltogether or is it some sort of custom to build something new each year?

I think the sooner the better, as the temps seem to be staying above freezing all week. I'm available Wed night, but not at all this weekend.
