Hey Fletch,
Welcome, I don't use Mach all that much, but it's very popular on the cnc forums. Check out cnczone.com if you haven't. I'd be happy to show you what I know. I have a small CNC lathe I just got that is running Mach as well. I have a VM with Mach and can bring the lathe in to play with too, let me know when You'll be around?
If you'd be willing to give me tips on how to grind lathe tools I'd be thrilled. See it online is just not the same thing as doing it.
What kind of CNC do you want to build?
I'll be at next weds meeting, and working on bringing life to a donated CNC inspection tool with some of the guys. Drop by if you can.
Pete

I'm not sure I'd be much help on grinding lathe bits. I haven't done that myself since school. I'm more of a mill guy, and when I do turning, I mostly just use inserted cutters. I'd be happy to offer what little experience I have, though!
I won't be able to attend the Wednesday meeting (I haven't even been able to check out the place in person yet), because I work nights. I'm going to try to make it by soon-- seems like you folks would be into some interesting projects!
I'd probably want to build a CNC lathe, since I already have a mill at my own shop. Or maybe do a conversion on my old Hardinge. I really won't be able to get into that project for a while, anyway; it's just something I'm kicking around for down the road.

Fletch,
Hope to see you at the Hack Factory, just ask who'll be around if you have a time you know you can come by.
I'd love to get a mill someday. I was actually bidding on a cool little EMCO with a 10 position tool changer, but it went out of my price range, they had the EMCO lathes with tool changers too, the little videos of them were highly entertaining, well at least to me.
