Avatars!

Postby Theo » Thu Feb 05, 2009 12:43 pm

Hey all!

I've just enabled profile avatars for us, here -- at least for the moment. They're still totally optional, but they're fun. I uploaded a 14K animated .GIF for myself as a test, and it works a treat. (However, if the tick-tock-tail kitty is too distracting or whatever, I'm happy to change it. As I said, this is a test; we'll see how it goes.)

Avatar size limits are 20x20 px minimum, and 100x100 px maximum. Size limit is 20480 bytes (20 Kb). I didn't see any format restrictions, but I'm guessing acceptable formats are .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc... basic WWW stuff. Little snippets of Flash (.SWF) probably won't work.

Click "post reply" with feedback! Thanks and enjoy!

Huh. Didn't know what that was; had to Google it. I'll look into it; no promises.

I don't see anything that has been published for Gravatar support in phpBB3. I see one hack for phpBB2.0.4 - 2.0.11 tough. Don't know for sure if it would work and it'd involve manual editing of a few of the board files.

Alright Jon I've got a Gravatar hack

I've enabled remote avatars. Simply go to Gravatar -> manage account

Click "Check this gravatar"
Copy the gravatar address (e.g. mine http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/ecfbd760 ... 23943?s=80 )

Append "&format=.jpg" (e.g. http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/ecfbd760 ... ormat=.jpg )

Enter that into the remote avatar box on your profile.

Win!

I would avoid animated avatars and sigs, as they can be extraordinarily annoying in large numbers . . .

You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means.

Very cool, thanks for doing this... so, uh, does it work? (says the non-Gravatar user)

hmm thanks, although it seems to defeat gravitar's purpose

like if you posted a comment on my blog using the email address you have registered with gravitar, your gravitar will automatically show up with your post
