I wonder if we could just get Nick to whittle the parts for us.

It would be a pretty sexy reprap with all polished wood parts.

This will dovetail wonderfully with my two ongoing projects. Obviously it has a direct application to my WallBot, but it also works well with my accumulation of HDPE working tools for Bessie II.

Some questions: What are the size parameters? How big is the x/y/z travel? What size of pieces are we looking to produce? Can the base platform support additive and subtractive methods? (Can we mount a router/Dremel as well as an extruder to it?) For the Z does the table or the toolhead move?

Lets get moving!

I support customizing it, but I wonder if we should build a straight up Darwin as iteration 1.0, then try to customize off that?

I'm mixed between a Darwin as designed and trying to do something slightly, but not radically, different.

Primarily, I see no reason to adhere dogmatically to their parts list and parts design when any X-Y gantry with a Z adjustable table under it will do what we need. This opens up the possibility of scrounging a lot more parts.

Today I got from a coworker a large-format printer with a 24" print head displacement. It's a REALLY good start- we'd be hard pressed to make as good a stage as that.

I'm also going to suggest that we forgo trying to make this capable of cutting anything more durable than vinyl. Resisting the deflection of the tool tip is hard work, if you're trying to drive a tool through a rigid material.
