Need help getting up to speed on laser cutter

I posted my intro on Google groups so I won't repeat it here. (With two forums, I am not sure which one to use for what. Why are there two?)

One of the things I mentioned in the intro was that I would like to learn to use the laser cutter. Can someone help me get up to speed and checked out on it?

I'll point you at Doug, known as thorpedo here on the forums. He's the laser's owner.
