Hi, does anyone have any suggestions for "kits that would be fun to build as a group in the hackerspace"?

* Either a big kit build individually, a la our MakerBot experience, or
* Small kits that everyone can build individually

These kits don't have to be electronic. Woodworking, knit-fu, whatever. Talk to me, Goose.

Good kits (IMHO) require a little knowledge from a lot of different maker disciplines. I dont have any specific examples, but something that require the full knowledge of a number of people to complete. Or said differently, something that challenges people to grow outside of their specific knowledge.

- an electronics application that need to be sewn into a garment
- rocket launch with microcontrolled video and gps tracking
- powerwheels race car
- interactive metal sculpture
- computer vision game installation

I meant literally a kit, a product.

There are a lot cool Arduino shields at adafruit, et al. I've assembled the Radio Shield from Argent Data, ethernet, audio, and video shields from various sources and they would be great for beginners. Limor Fried (adafruit) has done a great job with the tutorials for assembling the shields. Sparkfun and Dangerous Prototypes have a lot of kits as well.

i've got plans for a 12" bandsaw.... any of the "gingery" tools would seem to be ideal candidates....

I was thinking about doing something with the tcmaker logo and EL wire, this could be expanded to other groups that have friendly logos. It would include electronics and wood working but most likely would be more like a how to instead of a all in one here is what you need to make it kit.

Big see the building a brewing system, keggerator auto system, could involve many disciplines.

Small / individual - bring you current items you'd like to keep organized, special tools, iPhone/pod/android , glasses, checkbook, whatever needs a home. Then on build night we thermo-form a custom fit wall hanging or table top organizer. We've got the proper plastic for these in white, I'll find a picture of what I'm talking about when I've got a computer.

How about those? Are those what you're thinking?
