Anyone have a use for any water softener parts? I have a friend who has replaced her softener, and was wondering if we could use any of the bits off the old one. Specifically, I'm told it's a two piece system: a large plastic drum for the salt (55-gallon-ish size), and a ~4' tank ("the blue torpedo") with the timer assembly attached.

If anyone's interested let me know...

i may be interested in the timer assembly, what does it do?

At a minimum, the timer is connected to a valve to switch the water flow between the mineral and brine tanks. If it's a demand softener, then there's a flow sensor in there somewhere. It might take the application of mechanical force with Extreme Prejudice to get it off the mineral tank (hmm, wonder where we'd get some of that?).

I've never encountered a residential softener system that wasn't driven by simple pressure differentials, so i doubt there is a pump anywhere in there.

I've already got a basement full of stuff I'll never get to, so I'll just eagerly await hearing about what cool thing(s) someone builds from the parts.
