Hey, this Wednesday it looked like we got a new soda vending machine!? I hadn't heard this was coming. What's the scoop, does it work, and what's happening with the old machine?

As I heard it there are two new machines, one snack one soda (with a working compressor).

The old one was on the loading dock (soda machine with bad comptessor, etc) and the second vending has a tread someplace here that talks about putting some items in it like Arduino chips, and the like.

I think the snack and soda machines are great additions, and I hear a rumor that a second working soda machine may show up to add to the selection of beverages.

While I was at "open hack" yesterday, trying to find some table space, I was blocked from a lot of spots where people had plopped their backpacks on the table. Maybe people are trying to reserve a seat location, but in many cases, I think people are just trying to find the first convenient space for things.

Until and if we get a decent set of lockers or something, I suggest building a wall cubby for people to put their backpacks, laptop cases, groceries, and whatever.

I know Jude could do an awesome job with something like this, but of course I'm not volunteering him or anything.

Probably a design with slotted panels for easy disassembly/reassembly is the best way to go.

How about just some sturdy hooks on the wall? I agree that it's a problem. I often have difficulty finding a good spot to put my backpack when I'm there. But also, if I have my backpack with me, I am frequently rummaging through it for tools, notes, my computers, whatever. I like to keep it close at hand.

About the current network/internet situation:

I'm guessing Brandon is on point for getting us a functional network again, and integrating the new space. I'm happy to assist in any way I can. I've got tools (toner/probe, punchdown, crimper, two-way radios) and plenty of networking experience. I know that mapping out the existing drops and running any new ones we need are both difficult without assistance. Just let me know if help is needed.

I had looked at the existing cable setup when the Asterix User Group was going to help set up a VOIP system with our phones, and they have the cables labeled decently, just not runs everywhere we wanted them. The ones from the fridge office to the classroom were run to get hard lines to the classroom, but making a good diagram of the existing setup would help everybody.

I can help with that if you want to plan a day / time to just map what is there. This would also benefit from the landlords DWG file of the space, but we can do this with out and just document it for when we have the file.

Awesome. I'm not quite sure what my schedule looks like yet, I think I'm free most of the weekend, and beyond that I don't know.

It would definitely be handy to have at least a rough map of where the usable data drops are, and where we need to add some.

By the way, what's happening with the Asterisk thing anyway? I still think that an internal phone system might be quite useful, especially now that the space is twice as large. If we have the hardware, I think I have sufficient Asterisk knowledge to get a basic system working.

They donated a server, we have the phones so it is just a matter of putting it together, which once we decide where the phones should be, is simple.

And if our Internet is a static IP, we can even set it up to have soft phones connect from outside (or invest in a DID and service to get a phone number and routing.

The first step was cables, I had just gotten them run, and the group went to quarterly meetings, then I got busy and have not been to a meeting in 9 months.

I think they still meet quarterly.

I love the idea of hooks for backpack / purse / Manpurse storage. a LOT.

Or cubbys. I like cubbys a lot. Cubbys are even better if we'd get snack time.

I have the skills that are NOT needed to make either hooks or cubbys; anyone who does have the skills want to step up and make it happen?

If so, I'll offer unskilled help, and the ability to lift things.

Just a heads up: The door between the new office space and the stairway needs to be closed to arm the alarm. Figured that out tonight when trying to lock up & leave.
