Laser Class

Postby Orkraider » Sat Jan 11, 2014 1:11 pm

I just scheduled my next laser class for Sunday, Jan. 19th, from Noon to 5 pm. If you're interested in learning how to use a laser cutter to make cool stuff, you should take this class. Today I made some little clear acrylic pieces for the game Stone Age, as it's game night tonight, and I wanted my own custom pieces: http://i.imgur.com/Bmrv5Gu.jpg
Come take this class at The Hack Factory, our space.

New Laser Class

Postby Orkraider » Tue Jan 14, 2014 5:33 pm

Just scheduled another laser class, as the previous one filled.

Do YOU want to learn how to use a Laser Cutter to make wicked cool stuff? Now's your chance! I just scheduled my next "Laser Cutter 101: Cutting Deeper" class at the Hack Factory, your local maker space run by Twin Cities Maker.

This class will take place on Saturday, February 1st, from noon to 5 pm, at the Hack Factory, and costs $65 plus tax.

As an example, here's a pic of what I'm working on today. I found some images of prints by artist Eva Zeisel, traced them in Inkscape, and cut them out of thin wood with the laser cutter: http://i.imgur.com/VtM64Vm.jpg

These will eventually be painted, and presented to my wife as a gift.

Here's a link to the class: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/laser-cutt ... 0177297571

If you have any questions, let me know.

Just to go on the record, I took this class and it radically changed my feelings about the laser cutter ... and maybe even about the creative process. When the machine first showed up, my kindest thoughts regarding it were "hey, this is something I might occasionally use, and its cool it brings new people in." Now its more like "why haven't I been using one of these all my life, what other machines can I learn that enable me to magically transform thoughts into useful material goods?"

Already I've got an hierloom quality toy chest for my son in the works, and am designing a tool set that will be sold in small volumes to custom motorcycle builders that serves the same purpose (actually probably works better) as one that costs about 5 times what I figure I can charge (while still turning a good profit).

Anything I can do in the future (for TC Maker or for members, or even the larger community) to pass that revelation forward to others, let me know. I'm rarely evangelical about anything, but in this case, I really think its worth it.

I have scheduled two new classes for Introduction to Laser Cutting at the Hack Factory, using our super awesome laser cutter.

One on Sunday, the 16th of March: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/laser-cutt ... 0917413277

And one on Sunday, the 23rd of March: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/laser-cutt ... 0917439355

Each class runs from noon to 5 pm, and costs $65, plus a small eventbrite fee.

The laser cutter is useful for a great many things, including helping make a Giant Jenga set my wife wanted, after seeing a similar set on the big bang theory: http://imgur.com/ORyURik
