Yes, it will have sound editing tools on it. There is a mac machine and a linux box, together there is a lot of possibility. Audacity is most likely installed on each box.

doesn't currently compile on 64-bit linux systems. That said, I would love to see a properly configured Jack+Ardour setup, since for the life of me I've never been able to get it working. Guess it all depends on what audio interface(s) the boxes are using.

I believe that Adam has some sort of external sound card that he is planning on using, I don't have direct access and can't comment on the 32 vs. 64 bit, but I can confirm that Ardour is not that friendly.

I have gotten jack to work properly quit a few times, the setup is a bit strange, but once you figure it out, it's pretty nice. I used it on a mac about 5 years ago.

Since the studio has not been set up the table was used for an event today, I have not heard any hard date or idea about when the music site will happen.

Could this be done in the classroom since we have a bunch of sound equipment in there? Also, what about rolling this in with the podcast stuff?

Also, I plan on setting up a boot server with different operating systems and targeted towards specific domains such as microcontroller programming, CAD, image editing, etc. It would be neat to provide a "distribution" of sorts with these tools that we can load on the classroom computers and have audio editing nights or classes.

Arthur Science (aka Adam) here. Somehow, I didn't know this topic was up until today or I would have been involved in the dialogue. The reason why the audio production workstation has not yet been set up is because I've been trying to negotiate an allocation of the classroom space for this project (just what you are suggesting smittex). At first I was trying to be cautious and make an informed decision about where and how to set this up so that I wouldn't be stepping on any toes (or otherwise disrupting the order of things); however, since this approach has been inadequate for making progress on this project I'm going to adopt the "DO-ocracy" philosophy by making the following statement:

Saturday October 1st (before noon?) I am going to start setting up the Audio Production Workstation in the corner of the classroom where the live audio gear and windows are, occupying a rectangular area defined by the two tables in that corner. If anything is in the way of this setup at this time I will safely move it to another area of the classroom and make reasonable attempts to notify the owner. If I do not receive any objections via e-mail at arthur.science@gmail.com then I will assume that everyone is happy with this plan.

As I recall I installed 32-bit CentOS for this very reason (ChucK compatibility)
Many of the software programs you listed are already on those systems, anything that isn't can be added no problem.

I like the idea of rolling this in with the podcast stuff, it makes sense, especially if Jude builds an isolation booth. I'd also be interested in hearing more about how this partitioned-by-purpose boot server would work.
