Proposal: have a "creating your own electronics tools" theme or presentation on an e-hack night. I've seen DIY Scopes, function generators, volt/amp meter, etc.

Perhaps something like this could be used as a frequency generator. They are surface mount, but can be hand soldered. http://www.silabs.com/Support%20Documen ... /si570.pdf It's 10mhz-1.4ghz i2c programmed

Just dawned on me: what if we use the SDR for the backbone for wave generation and digitalisation? Its got several fast high resolution ADCs and an FPGA. We'd have to create a daughterboard, though... I've been thinking about using that as a backbone of a universal benchtop tool for scope, wave generator, spectrum analyzer, etc. It definately has the capabilities and horsepower.
