Ok, since nobody has had a interest in checking the two LCD's in the Lounge, so I will return them to the FreeGeek Recycle bin so they can decide if they will sell to a vendor

Sorry, I definitely would have taken a look at those but I forgot all about them in the midst of the major cleaning operations. I bet at least one of them probably just needs a capacitor replaced on the power supply board, I've already fixed a different one that way. Your call; I can take a look at them tonight or you can take them back.

The 19 should need just that, but my electronics foo is bad...
I did not pick them up, got to the HF late last night, and was not going to make a trip back to FreeGeek.
So they are still there, and if you think you will have time, I can leave them.
I just was not going to let them become more E-waste for a landfill.

oh heck, dude, I saw those and didn't realize what the deal was. I knocked myself out of the loop somehow.
I'll look at them too.

Yeah, I lose track of exactly what's going on sometimes. I definitely saw those monitors there, saw the "please do not move" signs on them, and heeded them. Only recently did I realize they were there to be tested and repaired if possible. I'll get on that this weekend.

I had a chance to look at the 19" Dell LCD tonight, I'm not sure what's wrong with it yet. It definitely wasn't designed for repairability, so it took me way too long to tear it down, and I ran out of time for any detailed testing or reassembly. It's in pieces in a box right now, and I'll poke at it further tomorrow or Saturday. My quick visual inspection didn't find any blown caps or other obvious defects, so it might just be irreparable.
Booka, if it can't be fixed, do you need it reassembled?

No, they do not need to be returned in a whole state, as we would just break them down.
Having said that, if the stand or any other part has a use to a project, it can be kept too.
The 19 was the one I had the most hope for, as it would flash on, but then go dark...
The 17 has no picture, but it may just be a backlight, so maybe see if the 19's is the same size (I doubt it, but still)
If it is the backlight, give me a bulb make and model, I can try the online place I picked up on for my old 15 dell last year.
Thanks for taking the time to look at these, I hope we can find a couple of working ones out of the group.

Does anyone have a handle on how the computers are coming along?
All the pc's that I'm loaning to the space are dedicated to this project, with the exception of the box that's the ham radio pc, and the servers.
There's one of these boxes set up in the classroom, someone has plugged a bunch of stuff into it and put some flavor of linux on it that I don't know; unless there's good reason, this is going to get it's hard drive wiped and ubuntu put on it.
I think the biggest obstacle to getting these machines up and running is hard drives.
I might be wrong, please correct me if so.
Does anyone have any spare hard drives?
Would booting from an ubuntu cd and saving to a 8 gig usb flash drive be sufficient for what these will do?
Will Sweet Polly Purebred ever marry Underdog?
Answers to these and other questions await!

These are questions that have been bubbling up to the top of my list lately too. If we don't get those computers set up soon, eventually they'll end up scavenged and lost, and I don't want that. I've got no hard drives to spare, but really it shouldn't be hard to obtain some. A few old 80GB IDE drives should cost next to nothing these days.
