Please, let's not try to design a logo by committee, or we get things like maroon and gold should be the standard colors, ew.

Just let those so inclined continue to do their thing essentially unencumbered and judge them on merit.

I'm with ya on letting people design stuff on their own, but I see no problem in letting people make suggestions. Maybe maroon and gold isn't your favorite then, but others might not mind it. If you have another thought on it, please share.

I didn't mean to single you out, my point is just that we're not designing a logo for a mega-corp, let's not geek it to death. As long as it's recognizable, interesting (and simple, but that's just my preference), then mission accomplished.

noise: i entirely agree about over design, but eventually it'll have to be some sort of group approval, and while we're all brainstomring, we might as well do feedback for each other.

if we're looking at "logo" though we need to keep in mind how it'll be used, and what characteristics make that work. generally speaking that's 1~3 colors, simple, recognizable forms, and something that can scale, and fit into several formats, all identifiable (i.e. portrait and landscape skinny, and squareish) as the same thing. think about brands you recognize, and what makes them stand out. we don't need a corporate megalogo, but we do want to be recognizable, and something we can put on stuff.

mn doesn't have state colors, the state university has colors.

the spoonbridge is IN minneapolis, but it, the stone arch bridge, orchestra hall, and ids are the things you get when searching "twin cities icons" in google and yahoo. i think anything "in" the cities is fair game, if we picked a building in stp, we'd be excluding msp. i don't think it'd be marginalizing NE mpls to do an image of the basillica any more than of the capitol.

Here's an idea for someone with a well developed right hemisphere.

We all seem to love our multi-tools (as evidenced at most meet-ups)

So how about some creative manipulation of a multi-tool.

So here's my new design concept!

In line with my previous suggestions, I came up with a general design that anyone from Podunk, Anywhere could recognize as an organization from the Twin Cities who makes workshop-type projects.

I've included a Minnesota shape to place us geographically (I did my own trace by hand from a map). This, I think, is the most universally recognized symbol for this purpose. The two gears represent the Twin Cities. The meshing represents working together to produce things. The gears also of course signify mechanics. The hammer as a "T" and c-clamp as the "C" help to enforce the "maker" and "workshop" concepts (I actually scanned a real hammer and c-clamp to get my outlines). The Tron-like font for "Maker" represents the electonics aspect of some projects.

This design takes lot of factors into account:
-It is easily reproduced as one, two, three, or multi- colored variations.
-There are only a few simple shapes.
-The main shape is unique.
-The main elements are vector graphics which can be scaled.
-There is enough open space to play with and customize the look.
-A silk screen maker, using the legacy knife and mask method, could cut this out without much trouble.
-Some elements can be used for small logos. I think a reasonable 16x16 logo can be made using the main elements.

Please reply with comments on this design. Is there anything that could be tweaked for better balance, aesthetics, or concept recognition? One thing I thought of, to add a little more diversity, would be to have "win" and "ities" in different fonts, such as chisel or stamp fonts.

I have a sample sheet of sixteen variations (high quality PDF). I will link to it here when I find a place to post it.

This was a ton of work. I hope we can seriously consider this for our logo.

I like that. I reverse my previous comment about the use of state shapes, it looks nice stylized like that.

Possibly just the hammer inside the gear, or MN outline, for the ultra-tiny favicon?

Contrast could be tweaked up a bit, on this one, but it's my fave of this series. I like.

Here is another stab at a logo, just b/w and simple. Alligator clips rule!
