Noise & I both played with that a few times. It's reasonably simple. My netbook had adequate horsepower.
Here's a video I shot one Wed. http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/5690418 [nsfw? mild language]

It would be really cool if someone had a good mic and a slightly better camera that you could use. Then you could use it to bring around and showcase different things at the meeting. If you can record it while streaming you could also edit it later into a highlights reel.

An actual camera and quality mic would be great. Using a netbook & built-in webcam is suboptimal.
We also have a couple of overhead document cameras kicking around the shop somewhere. Those would rock for soldering tutorials and such. I think it might be cool to record some of the classes and have at least video highlights online, if not entire sessions.

Ustream can record online, or on the local hard drive. Not sure about formats or editability.

I was thinking Nagios could be used to do the HF occupied, not. Sensors could be placed for lights on, noise, door openings, even constructive things like a pannel to indicate we are out of Mt Dew (or some other flavor) in the Fridge.

I had planned to put Nagios on the Asterisk server in the basement, but we have no power down there. Once the Asterisk server is up, we can also set up an intercom for the shop and outside. Plus set up voice mail boxes for members and groups (with outbound calling trees, and other things)

But.. Again, for the want of a Nail..

I was intending to hook a light switch or something up to a lighted sign, and also to a junky PC. The PC would run a simple webserver, hosting one image file. That file would be generated by a script to say either "The Hack Factory is occupied" or "The Hack Factory is unoccupied" based on the position of the switch.

Once that's done, if the networking can be figured out appropriately, it would be trivial to embed that image into the website, or wherever.

I'm all for the camera idea as well, if we can get our hands on a wi-fi camera or something. Maybe an X-10 camera and a video capture card.

This could also be done by hosting the image on this webserver and creating some lightly authenticated access point for an Arduino to login to and flip the state depending on a connected switch.

Hosting the web accessible bits on a device in the shop would require a dynamic dns solution. And an Arduino (or equivalent) is much smaller and less computational overkill than a clunky old pc (but probably more expensive if the old pc is already available)

I'd love to have a Fridge Cam that takes a pic every time the fridge light comes on.

Also, why not just have a webcam in the workroom and wood shop? Many hackerspaces have them. It's not like there's enough resolution to really see anything or anyone in great detail.

Thanks Pete for the Blog post, with this type of information showing up, it makes the Blog (and group) look like we do things. Rather than having a stale post of some administrative function from a month or so ago.

Now myself and others need to follow suit, maybe we should even pick a Wednesday blogger and rotate. Plus there are other days too, I hope to head down today, and may even have a camera to bring in to let the HF use for this.

But this is the type of stuff I would expect to see if I were looking, and I do see at Pumping Station One, and other sites (though I think you did a better job, but I am biased)

Brad,

Thanks, a better camera would help, and I have no idea how to get WP to layout decent columns or anything really in a useful format, maybe Skyler can help me out? There's plenty of cool stuff going on, I had more pics, but wasn't holding still enough for the phone cam. I'd love to see others jump in and post happenings around the HF and elsewhere. I see you did just that and put me up there, but I'm not sure you caught my good side :).

Pete

I don't think that Wordpress does column very well within a post. Your options are pretty much left, center, right for paragraph formatting.

After a lot of dilly dallying and fannying about, I made my first blog post.

Is there any way for me to do this with raw html?

I think in that as I write, and it'd be a lot easier than the process to get a pic in my post.

Thanks for setting up the rights for me, Pyro, if I didn't say that already.

Thanks for the post!

As far as editing in HTML goes, there should be a couple tabs at the top of the editor box, click on "HTML" to edit the post's raw HTML, and click on "Visual" to go back to the WYSIWYG editor.
If it ain't broke, your version is outdated.

awesome, Steve, thanks! If it had been any more obvious, it would have bit me in the ass!

Did some playing around, turns out that you can use html tables. This is what I always used for formatting before I decided wow I should really learn pure css someday. (in other words, I still use tables)

If anyone has any questions, let me know; here's a html snippet I used to test columns in WP

<table>
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>testing</td>
<td><img src="http://i.imgur.com/3VV9Z.jpg" alt="Hosted by imgur.com" width="50" height="50" /></td>
<td>I don't know what we'd put here, perhaps a picture or some other lovely thing like that. anything is possible.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>testing</td>
<td><img src="http://i.imgur.com/Xl2eq.jpg" alt="Hosted by imgur.com" width="50" height="50" /></td>
<td align="right">this could be another huge block of stuff here</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
