I thought the rope spring was located at the midpoint of the device (also halfway up the vertical beams), and we just needed the hands to hold the bowl in place at the other end by the wheels?

The hands will be cosmetic, yes. One at the spoon end, one at the bottom of the handle (thereby concealing the spring mechanism, for the most part). Imagine it the way you'd hold a plastic spork to flick a pea across a cafeteria. Hypothetically, of course. ;)
I can see linking the top hand to the release mechanism (easy) so the spoon will appear to pop out of the "trigger finger" as it hoists the cherry away.

FYI, I'm going to try to collect the last couple parts I need for the hot wire cutter today. Just in case anybody else was going to work on that.

I believe Michael already has the actual wire for it; have you spoken with him?

if i can find it i have some large format printer transfer wires ~36" long very thing gold coated tungsten? very thin and strong, designed to kick off electrons.

dunno if it'll work, but iv'e got a few somewhere.

Based on some experienced advice given to me, I think thin may not be so good, we will have deflection problems and it can break easily. 18 to 20 gauge was recommended. I was originally going to get some nichrome from mcmaster, but will have improvise in the time available. It should be easy enough to switch out the wire, so we can try different things if need be.
