CNC router usage for Mutant Vehicle project

Postby zdrew » Mon Apr 09, 2012 12:48 pm

I am working on a Mutant Vehicle (like an art car but generally more dramatically mutated) for Burning man 2012. I haven't finalized the design yet, but I'd like to use the CNC router to speed up fabrication of one part of the design.

Ultimately I will 100-300 ~5" diameter disks cut from 1/8" or 1/4" thick plywood sheets. I imagine this will translate to something like five 4' x 4' sheets or less. In the nearer term, I will need to make some prototypes.

I have considered using Ponoko, but I could probably save money and get more hands on experience at the Hack Factory.

Thoughts? Would anybody with advanced experience on this machine be willing to assist?

I think KellyM might actually have a "unlimited supply of discs around that size, I would pm him. Otherwise stop by Wednesday night and talk to the cnc people, there are a few of them running around.

I'm one of those CNC guys, I'd be happy to help, my CNC, has a max 24" sq envelope, and it's not leveled for it's whole area at the moment, but we could work around that. We could also talk with the owner of the 4' x 4' CNC and see if we can use it, that would speed things up greatly.

If you've got some material, we could knock out some prototypes on Weds Night.
