I finished the stock rack and assembled some of the steel shelving that we had lying around at HF. I gently re-stacked projects by Swinkdaddy and a few others on the new stock rack.
The steel shelf isn't done. It needs five 4x8 sheets of 3/8" OSB or similar, 5 2x2x8' and some screws to complete the shelves. Right now there are a few 4x4 sheets of plywood on the steel rails, but they're just lying loose and I don't like that.
I suspect this may cause some conflict, as no area wants to lose more square footage to storage - the idea that we want to store makers' projects is in opposition to our ability to have floor space for cool tools and nifty gadgets. With that in mind, let me say that I understand the shelf isn't necessarily in its final resting place. It needed to be built, however, to give folks a real idea of how big it is. There are more shelf parts on the cart, but I don't know if there's enough to build another complete shelf or not.
When picking the place I'd assemble the shelf, I was concerned about space limitations at first, but there's over 6 feet between the corner of the shelf and Matt's new CNC. I think it looks okay where it is - particularly if we get Curtis out of the wood shop.
RiggerJeff and I (and probably many other makers as well) independently came to the idea of utilizing the 13 gallon containers with interlocking lids that are readily available at Costco and most big box stores for member storage. If my guesstimates are correct, this shelf will hold 60 (6x2 layout, five levels) such containers when complete - you can see one sitting on the corner of the second shelf as an example. I'd like to voluntarily declare this shelf as being for containerized storage only - otherwise it'll eventually look like the existing storage near the classroom, which is, let's be honest, a little messy looking.
TODO:
I'd like to put the 4x4 square of pegboard on the narrow end opposite the wall. This would be a good spot to hang some cleanup stuff as well as other handy items. Also a spot for a clipboard & pen listing whose container is where and giving instructions on obtaining containers.
