Even if you're not into homebuilt airplanes, there are often some good articles in the Experimental Aircraft Association's Sport Aviation magazine. They regularly have build-it or basic electronics or physics or aeronautics articles. The current issue has a nice little article on building a workbench on page 78. I dunno if they're going to make this available for all future issues even if you're not an EAA member or not, but it's pretty cool!
