What do you call yourself?

Postby fnirt » Mon Jan 19, 2009 10:47 am

I hesitate to call myself an "artist" as sometimes I'm the only one who appreciates my work as such.
Calling myself a "maker" confuses common folk.
"Mad Scientist" comes close to what I do, except for the Mad part. And the Scientist part.
My wife probably has a word for what I do but I'm not going to use that one.
"Crafter" doesn't seem to fit either, as folks think immediately of felt.

How do you explain away the magical things you do in your workshop?

I don't really call myself something like that very often. If I'm among people who'll understand that I don't just mean computers, I'll use hacker sometimes.

I stray away from using "hacker" because of the negative connotation it has in the general public's eye. Not that I personally have a problem with it, but it seems that the first reaction of people when confronted with the term is a negative one. As such I would advise against using any form of hacker for our name in the future.

In my personal life I don't title it anything though. I do consider myself an artist (and for that matter artist has in itself also a negative connotation).

Two quotes come to mind, but I cannot remember the specifics exactly. The first being something along the lines of "judging your artwork from the impressions of family members and close friends almost certainly will result in a feeling of inadequacy"

and the second comes from an interview of Anthony Braxton talking about his music, why he does it, and why music does not need to be so rigid which concludes with the feeling that we shouldn't be so afraid of making mistakes, as they have a sort of magical quality to them.

Anthony Braxton interview

An artist to me is a very broad category, and holds in it a broad range of people and professions and works.

You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means.

a designer, craftsman or hacker depending on what i'm doing.

the bathroom remodel is more designer
leatherwork, pipecarving, props making (hopefully boat building) sorts of things is more craftsman
cludging together a widget for a one off, or a quickie costume bit is hacking it together.

I still call myself a hacker from time to time.
others call me a mad scientist, evil genius, and some other less colorful names.

But mostly, I just call myself Dustin... or daddy. :)

What did Da Vinci or Michelangelo call themselves? It's for future generations to figure that out. ;)
Make it happen.

usually either a nerd or a crafty lady... sometimes i refer to myself as a bumbling sidekick, but that's reserved for when i assist people with large projects that provide ample opportunity for injury.
