Re: Make: Day

I just uploaded a bunch of photos and I've got a ton more on the way. It's taking alot of time to whittle down my pile of 800+ and edit the good ones. :)

Make: Day

I had a blast today at Make: Day. I was the overwhelmed Geek Squad guy taking a ton of photos of everything and everybody there. :)

It was such a blur, I'm having trouble putting the faces with the names.

Who else was there? What did you guys think? How was it?

Re: Equipment Wishlist (realistic version)

Most of Metis' list is an excellent roundup of vital basic tools. Without the basics it simply wouldn't be a shop. There's nothing worse than starting a project then looking around to discover that you don't have a tool you need. The tools we seek will have a great deal to do with our vision, of cou...

Yeah, I look forward to hearing about your observations and experiences on your tour. You should throw some photos up on flickr and share the link. :)

Re: Resources

Personally, I'd be much more inclined to participate in a cooperative space run democratically in a way that would make it eligible for non-profit status in time. If someone has the capital to kick up a commercial venture like TechShop, more power to 'em, but for a hobbyist, I'd rather have the com...

Re: co-op model, private club model, condo model?

A tiered model makes alot of sense to me but it can be challenging to work out the details on it. I can see why Tech Shop stuck with the $125 flat "member" fee but they do also offer single-day rates and student fees. Any shop like this is going to be a boon to local artists, the bicycling...

Re: How should we approach the membership fees

I wouldn't hesitate to pay $25 a month for this, depending somewhat on location, once I stack it up against where the rest of my (truly) discretionary cash goes. I'm thinking that for alot of people a membership to a workshop like this would be more than just entertainment. But for many it would be...

Re: Storefront and/or internet sales of "made things" and kits

I saw NYC resistor is using http://www.etsy.com for some if its product sales. I am not sure if using them bypasses the safety and liability, but at least people purchasing things from that website know they are hand made. Etsy's great, a few of my friends have used it to sell craft/art creations b...

Indeed. A good name will probably come in due time. I've found the best names/brands for things come up at the strangest times.

Re: For what, exactly? (mission clarity)

A meeting of the minds would be great for sure. I agree that it'd be a good idea to let the group simmer for a week or two at the very least. It'll build more awareness and we'll get some time to discuss bigger ideas prior to the meetup to have some starting points. The people will define the space,...
