Re: Plea for the SGI Indy

I used to hack on SGI hardware and one of the biggest problems with it is that SGI as a company couldn't spell "host security" if their life depended on it. And as far as getting GCC to work, IIRC Irix was one of the few Unices that shipped without development headers so you couldn't get G...

Re: Bylaw and Process Review Committee

Riley, I like the spirit of problem-solving evident in your post. You bring up some interesting options to solving this problem I had not considered. This is exactly the kind of creative thinking required to make this policy thing work. I will need to take some time and digest it. I'm printing our y...

Re: Bylaw and Process Review Committee

I'm not able to post anything on the WIKI (and I'm not sure you want me doing this, heh) but I would like to implement a change to the bylaws that provide a better process around tools and equipment. I would like to see that controlled resources are: 1. Checked out and checked in again under a signa...

Re: RE: Adding controlled access to some resources.

Guys I really hate to say this but I really think we need to push for grants and corporate sponsorship so that we can have an operational budget so that we can have someone like Jon our shop manager or who ever we decide on full time. This person can monitor the tool usage, repair broken tools and ...

Re: Adding controlled access to some resources.

With all due respect, this position you hold is one that is in keeping with someone who does not have a $1300+ piece of equipment that is being abused by people with an "enlightened self interest". That's pretty cold, dude. I'm done with this conversation, have fun. Riley Cold is holding ...

Re: Adding controlled access to some resources.

What really saddens me is, if you're at the point where one more incident will make you pull it out, and there's been a consistent pattern of disrespect towards your plasma cutter, I think this won't have a happy ending. You're right: it won't have a happy ending as it stands right now. Because it'...

Re: Adding controlled access to some resources.

there are really several problems we need to address, and controlled access will fix several of them. tragedy of the commons would be fixed because people would be held accountable. e.g. i show up, adn tool is borked, last person to use it is logged. maybe somethign went bad, and they reported it. ...
